You're kidding right? You haven't 'noticed' the news can magically pick when 'Australian markets are set to open lower today' even before it happens? Of COURSE we follow the S&P500 & the Nasdaq. It defines global sentiment across everything from shares in eggs to the mining stocks. We follow them almost to the point. Individual equities move either side of it, of course - but if you think they have no effect, you need to do economics 101. Open the ASX200 graph, and open the S&P500 and compare them. You 'might' just notice a similarity.
The very drop that TRIGGERED the Aussie market fall, and good ol' APT to go to $8 was the S&P500. Pay attention!
