if you have multiple entry points on a single stock with some under water and some in profit, i believe you do have choices on how to deal with it tax wise.
you should check with your accountant, but my understanding is when you're working out your tax liability, you can chose to either deal with each purchase as an individual block or work out the average buy price of the collective purchases when selling....depending on tax imlications/advantage...but once you've decided, you need to consistently apply this approach with the balance.
