ANYONE who came back from the Christmas break with enough nerve to bet on base metals miners should have at least doubled their money, shares steaming ahead of the recovery in the metals themselves.
Led by copper miners and followed by previously hard-to-like nickel, lead and zinc, small-to-mid cap producers have staged a big rally, although most remain well below the peaks they scaled in the boom.

Vale announced yesterday that Chinese copper imports had increased 33 per cent year-on-year last quarter, not only on strategic inventory building, but on a recovery in the domestic economy.
It expects China's economy to improve over the next three quarters, bolstered by the strengthening in domestic demand growth.

Note the strengthening domestic demand growth. The US and Europe have been calling on China to rebalance and China out of prudence has been rebalancing. So what if the US and European demand remains weak for a while?
