Escrow release are shares that are part of an IPO or an employee's salary or bonus. While they are under escrow, they are yet to vest so technically aren't full shares yet.
For example, an employee might get 1000 shares as a bonus but they don't vest for 5 years. It incentivises them to work hard and make the company successful. During these 5 years, the shares are under escrow. Once they vest after 5 years, they are released from escrow.
Hope that explains it and I've explained it properly. Someone may correct me.
