I think that management's use of the word "cornerstone" was incorrect in these circumstances. When I think of a cornerstone investor it is a single entity who is committed to holding a large number of shares medium-long term. As far as I am aware, Fresh Equities simply offers sophisticated investors access to these deals, so the $2m commitment from them was probably made up of many "sophisticated" clients of theirs. Correct me if I am wrong.
