Thanks @gerzensee for mentioning Epicurus ( Επίκουρος, 341-270 BC) - a truly great human being - & I believe you are correct; he didn't advocate throwing stones at dogs (or people for that matter).

Although I acknowledge they may more properly belong on the MSB - Psychology of Trading thread, here are a few of his Sunday thoughts for consideration:

• " If the gods listened to the prayers of men, all men would quickly have perished: for they are forever praying for evil against one another."
• " To make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires."
• " Of our desires some are natural and necessary, others are natural but not necessary; and others are neither natural nor necessary, but are due to groundless opinion.",

and my personal favourite:

• " Of all the means which wisdom acquires to ensure happiness throughout the whole of life, by far the most important is friendship."

I commend a reading of Epicurus to all holders, prospective former & present.
