Lily of the Valley: I have tried for ages to get the old-fashioned 'muguet' perfume. Last year I fluked an old, but still unopened bottle, which was subtle but fresh and delightful now I have ordered something cheaper, but it is nasty. There is a chemical way of reproducing all floral fragrances, and this one is pungent.
I am not too keen on vanilla - personal prejudice: there used to be groups of middle-aged to elderly women come on the parliament house tours and you could smell their vanilla powder or whatever from a fair distance - not revolting, just funny and I 'typecast' the smell. Now I am an elderly lady myself, I want a fresh perfume . . . I have never worn much perfume, but find it is now part of my morning routine, even if I don't go out. I use vanilla flavouring in cakes, though.
There is nothing like fresh flowers in garden or vase, though - I adore white lillies, violets, European lilacs, roses ....
the fragrance of the blooms of the Murraya tree and also some bushes near me, I think one is the infamous Angel trumpet are fabulous.
In Europe I could get almost into a meditative daze by sitting under a Linden Tree in bloom; I think the English call them 'lime Trees'
People perceive smells differently - I am also a person who loves the herb Cilantro, but know some of my friends can't stand it, I also don't mind a healthy man's sweat - but there is one person among my circle of acquaintances I keep away from, because of his smell - and he does wash and is clean - I keep thinking he is ill and I gag when he comes near me. Maybe he is ill, but cannot ask.
Need to get back into my garden - made myself lunch today and ate a little too much so had to take a break.
go well
