Apparently, perfumes can smell different on different people's skins. They can also deteriorate over time. I used to go to my calisthenics class using lavender wiped over my hair. The heat of the exertion meant the nearby ladies would notice it and ask what it was. It was because I was wearing it in my hair and probably I was getting hot headed, lol.
Vanilla essential oil is different from the vanilla which is used for cooking. Don't know when it began being used as a perfume other than I certainly don't recall it from my youth or from my mum. I remember being introduced to it in a pharmacy by a salesgirl who told me to tell me what I thought of a perfume she was testing me on. I then said, "it smells like a cake". She was delighted because she told me that it was, indeed, vanilla.
Horses for courses, I say. I once worked in an office where a woman wore perfume every single day. The corner of the office always smelled heavily of perfumes and as a 16 year old, I thought it was horrible.
