Some posters have asked for "plain english" explanations of the underlying tech.
CNN is the current tech.
This MathLab presentation explains how great CNN deep learning is, and the amount of training data it needs.
A few months ago, Anil presented a webcast which had an inquisitive audience of experts, but when he demonstrated one-shot learning, they were suitably impressed.
