It's probably consistent with how an upper middle class teenage girl with little or no sexual experience might process rape from someone she considered a friend. Cautionary tales about rape at that time were more of the some dirty guy you don't know drags you off the street and commits a violent assault type. The Anita Cobby/Janine Balding crime prototypes from that era. I doubt it was so much about the private school boy at the National Debating Championships using force following a day's debating and a convivial dinner. So it's not implausible that a teenager might initially process an assault in those circumstances as being something other than rape, and the "desirable" guy who committed the act as still being desirable.
