Yes Australia is increasingly being subordinated by China , I imagine the end game from China's perspective is that Australia will become a state of China in some form just like Hong Kong . I am too old for it to affect me however it will impact negatively on my younger family members .
I doubt the current White house admin considers defending Australia in their national interest , so really up to Australia to work out there own method of defense , being non nuclear does not cut it unfortunately .
