FUNDING SPOTLIGHT: Insitro, a startup that uses AI techniques to discover new drugs, raised $400M in a Series C funding round. Specifically, the startup uses genetic, phenotypic, and clinical data, combined with machine learning, to find potential drug candidates in medicine.

• Insitro will use the fresh funding to expand its capabilities and development pipeline, as well as "access enabling datasets .... complementary technologies and platforms, and potential in-licensed assets..."
• In 2020, Insitro expanded its target discovery platform in partnership with Gilead and collaborated with Bristol Myers Squibb in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
• It also acquired Haystack Sciences, a chemistry platform that allows for machine learning-based molecular design, according to founder and CEO Daphne Koller, a prominent AI researcher.
• The latest funding was led by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Casdin Capital, ARCH Venture Partners, Foresite Capital, GV, Third Rock Ventures, and others.
