""The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is asking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to more strictly regulate autonomous vehicles and driver assistance technologies. The NTSB's letter to the NHTSA cites accidents involving Tesla cars and an Uber self-driving test vehicle.
More:
- In the letter, NTSB chairman Robert L. Sumwalt suggests that automakers move toward more robust collision avoidance systems, driver monitoring systems, and more, to prevent drivers from becoming too reliant on current driver-assistance systems.
- The NTSB can investigate accidents but can't regulate them. Based on findings, it can make recommendations to automakers and the NHTSA, which establishes the safety standards.
- The NTSB's letter frequently cites Tesla, which recently expanded access to its “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) beta. Drivers who use it are still expected to keep their hands on the steering wheel and be ready to assume control, as the system isn't fully autonomous.
- The NTSB expressed concerns that Tesla is testing FSD with "limited oversight or reporting requirements." It cited a fatal 2018 crash of a Tesla Model X in Mountain View, Calif.
- Earlier this week, the NHTSA said it's investigating a “violent” crash involving a Tesla sedan that hit a semi-truck and became wedged under its tractor-trailer. It's unclear if Tesla's FSD or Autopilot may have contributed to the accident.
