thx to all for the definitions of mud engineer...spot on. I mis-read this term in an earlier post (I was thinking "mud logger" - meaning someone who logs the cuttings and identifies/describes geloogical formations being drilled).

One of the other key reasons for employing a mud engineer is to balance pressures in the hole by weighting the mud...reading more into this, so maybe one of the problems they had with Yangir-1 was gas overpressure when drilling those pesky gassy coals and they had to kill the hole before it got out of control. Its a good problem to have in one way, but very dangerous if not controlled properly. The results of this hole will def be worth the wait.
