While western car companies like VW lead sales in China (VW China sales: 3 mil + vehicles P/A) these models are made in China; not imported, so they are considered Chinese cars in the same way that we considered Commodore, Falcon & Camry Australian while they were manufactured in Aus.
Western car manufacturers are gradually migrating component manufacturing to China to supply manufacturing/assembly plants elsewhere globally. eg: BMW
Up to 18% of US car components are manufactured in China and just have a look at the country of origin of your local "will fit" auto parts suppliers.
