More than shorting I would say that fear of the short lifting prompted selling out.

I heard a hedge fund exec on the radio today explaining how shorting is good as it helps bring companies down to their real values quicker.

We all know that's partly true, but also bollocks when you have plenty of companies in 2009 driven to a fifth or less of their NTA's.

It is also damaging IMO, as it allows volume boosting in risky companies aka mfs, abc, bnb, and the potential of large losses due to sudden VA. It is their risk but it is purely throwing good money after bad. Sometimes profitable, but often akin to lining creditors pockets. In that sense the ban was actually beneficial for the shorters protecting against the risk of their own stupidity.
