Hi jip123,
I'm in same boat.... Been to busy raising family last 20 years. I have only ever had shares that have been issued by companies I've worked for in the past. Being in my 40's and kids all grown up I'm now focusing on utilising a reasonable disposable income to generate some longer term wealth with the view to potentially retire in my 50's. I have a healthy super but will need to fill that gap between early retiring and accessing the super.
So back to the topic, I have invested what is a substantial amount in IOU for someone that isn't able to analyse speculative stocks like some of the others here on HC. I've just looked for emerging companies in markets I believe are going to be a big part of the future moving forward. IOU being the main one which I have 100K shares of, next largest is 3DP then BRN, NEA, and RFX. I decided to not put all my eggs in one basket, all these are established businesses with a bright future that I'm plan to hold for around 1-3 years depending. In the meantime I will continue to periodically add to my ETF portfolio as my safer investment.
The past 6 weeks have been challenging seeing my portfolio go up and down by up to $10k over a week, general down more than up. But I don't see any fundamental changes in the businesses I have selected, from what I have learnt in my short time is that there are lots of games played by professional people that can manipulate the market. I don't understand it, probably never will, but stuffed if I'm going to hand over my within the next 12 months at least.

I'm holding on tight to my shares, I'll be happy with $2.50 in 3 years but really the sky is the limit if they do manage to dominate the region in that market. Worst case scenario I'll lose some money but will recoupe it back at tax year when I get gains from my investment property.
