I agree that the use of geometric means is a little odd, but GMs are considered more accurate than arithmetic means when there is some variability in the data. Re: CIs - they have used industry standard 95% CIs and the results are highly significant at p < 0.05. And they have reported % differences in GM calcium content, which again seems fine.
Results look good to me. The SP drop seems to be related to the exercising of options.
And yes, 8 months for a rat is comparable (in terms of physiological changes) to ~ 30 years for a human (depends on strain of rat).
