Note that the big boys are not focussed purely on intra share trading - I believe they play cross trades as well.
For example suppose X is watching the market and sees that company Y is consistently scoring points (or its goals can be misrepresented as such) and it is a considerable time until it will score an undeniable goal - that is one which is not capable of misrepresentation. Meanwhile there is company Z which also kicks goals and is likely soon to win the the World Cup, figuratively speaking. So X quietly unloads Y and buys Z. Once Z begins to really move, X will be back to quietly buying Y again.
Note that W may be a group, each with an assigned task in order to make it more difficult for outsiders to see what is going on.
