IMO:- This kind of action will elevate Milligan into the pantheon of investigative journalists. She's already enjoying more literary awards to add to her CV. The real damage will be Porter's rep for evermore. And I would bet he was cajoled into a suit by his backstabbing friends, keen to elevate themselves through the ranks.

The ABC is govt corporation and very hard to kill as are most corporations, There is no criminality here, just defamation and punitive damages, which we the taxpayers will be liable for. The Govt has already stated any damages wont come out of the ABC budget.

The danger for Porter, if he should fail, is that while a Govt corporation is probably prevented from suing a public servant, there's nothing stopping Milligan counter suing for the same reasons ... implied defamation and punitive damages. She probably won't and that will also send a message to her fans on who is the bigger man.

I remember ol' Joh suing everyone he could to shut them up, but it came back in spades when he blinked, finding the only political friend he had was Peter Beattie of all people.
