I don't knock university education. What graduates need to understand is that all they have attained by graduating is a basic understanding and that they have to develop that further with actual experience. There are good doctors and bad ones. I've struck both. I am living testomy to two particularly bad ones but also to good ones that had to repair the damage. One surgeon "retired" as a result of an operation he performed on me. Another time a doctor sent me home with a dose of asprin because I had the flu. Next day I was admitted to another hospital in a bad way with viral encephalitis. The first doctor was just doing time at a public hospital after graduating. The second had spent a lot of time in Africa and was familiar with the disease.

Same goes for engineers. I'm not a qualified engineer but in my early days I took over from one that had made a mess of building a factory and installing the machinery at a whaling station in New Zealand. I was put in charge and given a free hand to get the thing completed and going. In 6 weeks it was operating. My experience working on the construction and operation of another station meant that I knew what was required and how to go about getting the job done.

My advice to graduates is that after graduation go forth and keep learning.
