Any other nation would not have had time to make an excuse about the attack on the USS Liberty. Top ranking military and politicians know the truth, and yet here we are 54 years (and countless lies) later.

Apparently flying an enormous stars and stripes from the ship, waving at the Israeli fighter planes and generally offering no sign of defence was insufficient for the attackers to realise that the ship belonged to their closest ally.

What followed was a relentless attack, only stopped when one person on board broke through the block on their communications. The Israeli fighters bolted at that point.

Disgraceful, but they're still besties all these years later.
