I'd estimate that given the small penetration of evs in Australia, it would cost more to administrate the tax than it would raise anyway.
Looking at how much you have to pay for an ev in Australia and considering how few evs are on the road , I'd say they are paying their fair share already.
Arguably, ev purchasers in Australia are subsidising the establishment of an ev industry here. Subsidizing those people that sell and maintain evs. If it wasn't for these people buying evs, there wouldn't be a growing ev industry, would there ? In 20 years time much of transport in Australia will be electric. All thanks to those people that dug deep and payed a significant premium for an electric car in 2020.
Firstly, there's the lack of infrastructure . Ev owners have to put in their own infrastructure at home. Another thing they pay tax on . Another thing that is helping create jobs in a new industry.
Let's not forget the extra taxes they pay based on the inflated sticker price of the ev in Australia because they are not subsidised. They are paying considerably more than the comparable ice model of the same car . Who is the beneficiary of those extra taxes ?
Should we talk about the cost of the pollution saving ? Those ev owners are already going above and beyond to lower Australia's carbon emissions. Something that the country has committed to doing. So, maybe they should be getting a rebate for that ?
It's not the ev's fault that Australia doesn't have a tax regime in place. Let's not forget Scott " there goes the weekend " Morrison whose hobby is bringing a lump of coal into parliament. If the federal government had addressed the ev issue rather than living in denial claiming " they won't tow your boat " we may well have had this sorted out already.
