Personally I consider myself a mum/dad investor. The reason for this is, that I never studied in the fields of economics or finance. I never attended courses (except one weekend with J. Ellies at the Gold Coast) to gain deeper knowledge in the field. My background is in pedagogy, social science and psychology. So definitely not a sophisticated investor, with a deep understanding of investing and often relying on other peoples insight and research.
So I am puzzled at the numerous people on HC who spend their valuable time trying to save "mum/dad investors" and "newbies". This often happens with hindsight (which is always 20/20) but not always. The first category of posters can be put in the "I told you so" basket and their motivation can be questioned. However the latter ones need to be, to a certain extent, be taken seriously especially if they put their arguments forward in a coherent, well researched and articulate way.
However I object to posters who try to protect my investment and with it to a certain extent my well-being. In this context I become the victim and the other person the saviour. As a self-identified mum/dad investor I would like to tell all the posters who try to "save" me from a financial loss following: 1. Thanks for your effort to those who are sincere in their endevour to "save" me (HC can be a cruel place for you!). 2. Please don't try to "save" me, as I am a grown adult and. IF you should be right by chance, I will learn and grow from this experience. IF you are wrong, you will probably not compensate me, or? 3. I don't want to be characterized as a helpless mum/dad investor victim. This characterization just disempowers me and makes my angry. 4. If you truly want to help me, write your well founded concerns and research up and I will gladly read it and take it into my considerations and be grateful for it. 5. Want me to sign up for litigation... read the previous points.
Of course it works also the other way around. People can become messiahs bringing untold riches to mum/dad investors. Yes I am aware of that.
So where are we at this particular moment. Well the Naysayers have definitely the upper hand and enjoying their moment in the sun, and as the Swiss say, making hay whilst the sun is shining. For how long, that remains to be seen. I for myself feel comfortable with my investment thesis and am not concerned about the delay.
