Just today in The Driven - Tesla has clearly stated it wants to go with 100% vision based self driving as it is "less energy intensive"
Given human brains design road layouts to be compatible with the way humans see and interpret things - a vision based system makes sense.
LIDAR has to look in every direction at once all the time - vision can concentrate on the objects it identifies - which is the whole principle behind the "Spike."
