No easy answer for that unfortunately. I am more of a FA med to longer term investors with an occasional short term trade.
I have been investing in the Share Market for over 40 years. Like most things in life, I think your learn more from the tough times than you do from the easy times. I have made good gains but have also been hit in most of the huge stockmarket adjustments since 1987. Huge losses help you to adjust your thinking, appetite for risk and your approach - much more than easy share price wins in a general rising hot market.
During the 80s and most of the 90s, a hell of a lot of reading and talking to people as no or little access to computers.
With the evolution of technology - the computer, laptops and mobile phones, the internet, online trading platforms, charting software / APPs, investment newsletters, stock investment forums like HC, twitter, facebook and youtube etc, there has never been this much information available for investors to consider in the past. Now is the better than any other time in history.
I read and research a lot across a variety of industries which is something I enjoy doing.
I also look at the macro and micro influences on these industries and current status. Identify which are looking positive or hot for the next few years.
Then I start to look at companies on the ASX that may benefit from a positive cycle in those industries.
Then I look at the quality of the Board, Mgt, Operations and Technical teams and their track record at that company and previous companies.
Look at and assess the quality of their web site and how good they are reporting and keeping their shareholders up to date frequently.
Then the status of their product and/or project portfolio.
Then read the ASX announcements over the past couple of years.
Read any available broker research reports.
Watch and listen to MD / CEO interviews after announcements.
Do a Google search on a company and see what pops up. Read any interesting articles.
These days, i also tend to check what others people / investors think about a company on HC, Twitter or Youtube etc. There are many very good people on these platforms that provide thought provoking ideas and their own analysis of stocks. Thank You to all those kind people.
I am a novice when it comes to Charting and TA, but I do play around with it a little and it does help to pick trends, entry or exit points etc. I admire people that have a more detailed skill in these areas. Worth finding and following people on HC and Twitter etc that demonstrate good ongoing performance.
That long list may seem quite daunting but after several years it becomes somewhat second nature. It is much easier to weed out industries and companies that don't impress you at a point in time. When you find a company that may offer some positive interest, sometimes your research will lead you to consider one or more other companies.
As an FA investor, an important thing to remember is why you have decided to invest in a particular company, its risk profile, key progress milestones to watch to assess your ongoing conviction to continue to hold, and what may influence you to exit your investment.
I am still learning every single day and still make mistakes, but less costly these days - the scars help to tame the Tiger in you over time,
