NSW’s plan to manufacture mRNA vaccines locally - May 4, 2021 — 1.05pm (SMH)

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 and other viruses would be manufactured in NSW under an ambitious plan that would create a new vaccine and therapeutics industry.The state government has convened a team of scientists to determine how the high-tech vaccines and a range of treatments can be made locally.

“NSW is always looking to the future and what will give us a cutting-edge lead in the future in terms of medical technology and how to treat various medical conditions including the manufacturing and development of a COVID vaccine,” Ms Berejiklian said on Tuesday.“The technology is already here, we have pockets of excellence of people who are experts in their field.

Ms Berejiklian said setting up the pilot project will take 12 to 24 months and hinge on the collaboration of the pharmaceutical industry, universities and medical institutions.

“This is about preparing for the future. It’s about using the best some of the best brains in the industry that we have in NSW, and allowing them to collaborate with industry and also with government support,” she said

NSW Chief Scientist Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte said the Premier has asked him to come up with a plan to make mRNA vaccines.“Manufacturing mRNA or having the ability to manufacture mRNA is essential to not just future vaccines and current vaccines, but also future gene therapies and lots of other therapeutic outcomes for NSW,” Professor Durrant-Whyte said.
