Hate to tell you, but i traveled extensively through the mid east in the late 60's , when Beirut was the pearl of the mediterranean, and Baghdad was simply the most sophisticated place on earth. And Palestine was a very happy society, people were extraordinarily friendly and the clothes they wore were the brightest and most colorful anywhere.
Syria was a different story but it held the worlds greatest treasures of ancient structures and artifacts.
