You just reminded me on how I got into the Mining Industry in the first place, I trained as a demolition diver on the Bass Straight Gas rigs; but could not dive after a skiing accident. Back then it was considered easier to teach a diver how to weld rather than teach a welder how to dive.
Australia is looking down the barrel of a skills shortage, Once upon a time a Mine Manager could issue on site Certificates of Competency to trainee Operators; Now it is down to Cert4 Train' and assessors who usually know nothing about how to Operate a machine !!! OH&S and PC have been dumbing down the Industry for years. Poor Operators result in high maintenance which will feed into the lack of trained Heavy fitters/mechanics. Anybody who bothers to track the cause and effect chain will see how Chaos Theory results in disasters
