British scientists says dogs could soon play large role in sniffing out COVID-19, page-21

A serious and yet unexplained potential risk of using dogs is that dogs do get Covid-19 from contact with people.

At this stage the risk of dogs handing back Covid-19 to humans has not been established and is thought to be very low.

The question is however if you are deliberately exposing a dog to hundreds of humans each day at an airport the viral load starts to accumulate and with the rate at which Covid variants are occurring by using dogs you could in fact start to spread the disease.

One way of course to avoid this is to take a dog out of service and isolate it for 14 days after every positive find but you are going to need a lot of dogs.
