'why losses are carried forward'
Plenty of reasons. If you also work and receive a salary, and your losses were greater than your salary then you may prefer to include extra profit in this financial year to pay some tax at a low tax bracket. If you held off on realising the profit, this could place you in a very high tax bracket next year. The net result over the two years would be more money in your pocket.
