Other main issues for current Na cells designs are weight- Na cells are x3 heavier, and the gravimetric capacity or density- possibly 40-50% less, if the cell can survive the voltage issues with the graphite anode.. .
Currently these lab cell designs are lasting under 80 cycles before collapsing.
However , just like Li-ion ( a alkali metal like Na) our buddy graphene has entered the scene.
Some research suggests a sandwiching of Na -ions between graphene layers could. solve voltage inconsistencies and so increase gravimetric density ie energy density on par with a average Li-ion cell of today.
So eventually a trade off of cheaper , but heavier.
The other problem is recycling. Being soo cheap it would be unprofitable to recycle. How does this workwith new E.U regulations? The same for LFP batteries- uneconomic to be recycled .
