I talked to a metallurgist who said that an alternative system (when water is an issue) was a magnetite media seperation. Basically (as it is not my field) he said that the coal pops to the top as it passes through and the sediments go to the bottom. A bit loose, but possibly the Chinese or someome else may get it to large scale. Potentially a lot more viable than the traditional route if water is an issue. Possiblly a lot more environmentally friendly in these PC times.
