Trading on five minute charts is fine for intraday trading because it gives the earliest buy and sell signal the problem is when a stock is not moving fast you will get whipsawed in and out of trades . The longer the time frame chart when using moving averages the less crosses you will get .
If you are going to be holding overnight positions I wouldn't be using moving averages to pick entries or exits on any time scale less than 15 minutes . Investors should only be watching daily or weekly charts. ( IMO)
