I hate to say it but the USD is still a safe haven i.e. cash is king. It is the most liquid store of wealth around. Sure its value will deteriorate over time, assuming inflation kicks i). Its just that I've been reading about the death of the US dollar here for ages and it hasn't happened yet.
Also, The Ascent of Money last night was about "Chimerica" - the symbiotic relationship between the Chinese savers and the American consumers. It is in the best interests of the Chinese to ensure the USD retains its value because they own so goddamn many of them!
