Drilling close to a neighbours permit - Most of Australia and certainly SA work under the law of capture. If you can drain it without trespass, it is yours. In a case where a well is close to the border, a prudent operator documents how the drill hole has drifted with downhole gyroscopes (the surface location is always carefully surveyed in any well). A vertical hole is never perfectly vertical and will veer slightly (dipping or uneven stata) - usually not much in the Cooper/Eromanga but wells in the Northwest shelf have moved 200m on a 3000m well.

Contingent wells like Snatcher 2 and 3 - When follow up wells are contingent on a drilling result most operators spend the 'paper money' (approvals and planning) but leave the field work (site clearing etc.) until the first well is a success. The operator also cannot start field works until the joint venture has approved the well. In many cases JVs, partners slow down operations while the operator takes the heat for any delay.
In this case, reports state that the rig is casing Snatcher 1 for completion and then 'skidding' to Snatcher 2. I take this as a strong indication that the JV likes what they see and wants more.
