They’ve been branded as arrogant by Beijing which might be seen as the code word for untouchable to local consumers.
As whipping up national loyalty continues to be the main thing the CCP uses to keep the public’s support this will most likely only worsen. Social media campaigns against the company have been allowed to run wild- in a country who’s government has almost complete control of the online narrative- which tells us the government most likely supports those damaging campaigns.
So where does that put them? I think in an increasingly tight spot where they’ll have to source the lowest cost minerals possible. Australia has no political turmoil that can be taken advantage of like New Caledonia and has no very low paid labour force like the DRC, which the Chinese market is happy to consume.
Where have they made money? The only two times has been via the sale of carbon credits, which will now be increasingly produced by the competitors themselves and by a recent crypto trade.
Pretty soon it will be Toyota that does a lot of the heavy lifting for Tesla by making the rolling chassis. Up until now it’s largely been Panasonic that provided the batteries.
Many place Tesla at the head of the EV ‘revolution’. Look to history. See what happens to the leaders of revolutions.
My lifelong historical study has shown that they almost always get chopped down once the revolution is won.
Toyota did it quietly. People didn’t even realise it was happening & they’ve slowly but steadily built up capacity via hybrids etc.
The good news for ARL holders is that Tesla’s woes won’t stop the pace of EV adoption.
In fact it may even speed it up as a very expensive, often poorly made & even more portly supported player gets out of the way. Hyundai, Toyota, Volkswagen, GM and the rest have consumer confidence and loyalty.
That is what will take us forward. Not a series of expensive & at times frivolous gimmicks. The F150 by itself will sink the cyber truck dream & there’s more competition coming besides that. Cyber semi? Watch as Volvo, International and a whole bunch of others pop up.
Autonomous driving technology advantage? Spending time and money fixing a problem that doesn’t exist.
A company should be much bigger than any one individual. When it isn’t, there is a truly fundamental problem.
If Tesla can survive? Good for them. If not?
The most important point remains- this will not slow down the EV market & can only help it as the big guns show up with models that by necessity will be priced lower & built to a higher overall standard than the Tesla range.
