It has been posed on several GMR threads the query "why is Royal Group going into resources/gold?", let's face it, they are a sovereign wealth fund with an abundance of oil cash currently, but all of the Persian Gulf royals know it won't last forever. Hence they have been buying US dollars/Treasury bonds for years, and it is no secret that American currency and gov't debt is looking riskier by the day, with commodities and gold looking like a safer bet.

If I were an Arab royal with responsibility to ensure my children and grandchildren did not have to return to herding and carpet weaving (not trying to be condascending, agriculture and light manufacturing was all the Persian Gulf had till oil found), I'd be investing in something that has steadily improving terms of trade on its side (commodities). And, I'd be doing it in the region where I have historical ties if I could (North Africa has welcomed Arab traders for a thousand years)
