I've found the same phenomena in people over 60 or so too. In that case most of them haven't been dumbed down as much as the younger people but rather they have a naive trust (faith?) in the media and in institutions such as government. And because it is a faith-based belief then no amount of actual evidence can cause them to doubt or question. Just my own observation of course.
