The Thurston kick was not intended to cause damage but a legitimate reactive attempt to knock the ball free (even thru this is not allowed)
The 8 point play was actually incorrectly adjudicated by the referee as the ball had been ground before the kick was made / if the kick had come before the grounding the extra field goal free kick would given
