The explanation is probably quite simple - these journalists write several articles a week, often on subjects they have no familiarity with.
More than likely they just look at a few press releases and other media stories and just come up with a plausible story that will get them paid.
Obviously, it's easy for those of us that have followed the company to find plenty of errors, but 99% of the readers have no idea, and probably don't care.
