Lynas definitely picked a jurisdiction with high power costs when they decided to build in Australia. The facility in Malaysia was also built in the wrong place and has paid the price. When looking for cheap power LYC should've looked to Sarawak where they have the cheapest hydro power in the world. The industrial hub at SCORE Sarawak sells power to its customers from US$0.022/kWh to Press Metal Aluminium and US$0.035/kWh to OM Sarawak. They have 20 year power contracts and every year that goes by they become even more profitable as electricity rates around the world keep increasing.
SCORE Sarawak is now the largest smelting hub in S.E. Asia outside China. More industries are moving there due to the abundance of cheap power.
Unfortunately Australia with its greenie ambitions are 10x more expensive and manufacturing will never be able to compete. Smelters and high energy users in Australia are a dying breed and will continue to move offshore.
