All about risks and odds.
No vaccination is 100% , either in preventing disease or preventing transmission.
But they are a hell of a lot better than 0%.
So when you are doing the sums and working out strategy to counter outbreaks , a high percentage of the population vaccinated gives you a lot more room to play with.
For instance, if 80% of WA was vaccinated, the 3 day lockdown would be unlikely to be necessary , as any spread that might have occurred , or was likely to occur , would happen more slowly , allowing tracing to be more effective.
As well , the consequences of more widespread illness is less for hospital systems , as the amount of severe illness in infected people is markedly less. And that is important , because people dont just die from covid when hospitals are overloaded , if you have had a heart attack and all your critical care beds are full , your survival odds go down.
So someone like me might have had a 4 to 10% chance of hospital , that is probably reduced by 75% , as well as my chance of getting the disease in the first place going down by 70 to 80%.
Figures are probably a tad better for Pfizer.
So I have had the jabs .
Do I , and should I , feel less at risk ,and am I a lesser risk to the rest of you , you betcha[at least from covid].
And on Melbourne , as long as you live on the tram map , best city in the world[ not so good further out].
