DRUG developer Biota Holdings says international royalties on sales of its anti-flu drug, Relenza, have more than doubled over the past year, even before the effects of the Swine flu pandemic are felt.
Biota said it had been notified by the drug's distributor, GlaxoSmithKline, that royalties for the quarter ended June 30 were $8.9 million on sales of $122.5 million.
This brought royalties for the 2008/09 year to $45 million on sales of $638.7 million, up from $20.5 million on sales of $304.4 million in 2007/08.
Biota's chief executive officer, Peter Cook, said there was a time lag between orders being placed and a recorded sale on the shipment of goods.
"The significant government stockpile orders placed after the swine flu outbreak in late April 2009 would appear as sales in future quarters,'' Mr Cook said.
