On the topic of shorts, I haven't been keeping as close an eye on shorts as I have in the past, but over 800k shares were shorted last Thursday (IIRC, might have been Wednesday). Also, over 300k shares were shorted on Monday, and a little over 250k were short sold yesterday. Interesting that the SP is holding up so well, especially given the fall in the PoG. I think
@Surges is correct that institutions are buying to hold for the long term, and the daily shorting is probably part of their accumulation strategy. The fact that we've seen a reduction rather than a significant increase in total shorts lately supports this theory. Basel III is a wildcard, though – have a feeling LBMA and Co. might try and make everyone feel their pain, just to make a point. Should only be a temporary thing, though.
