While the following is a little off topic, I find it interesting and it aligns with my dietetic background, so I thought I would share it with you all. The FTO-directed downregulation of apoptosis in adipocytes makes a lot of sense from a human evolution and particularly an energy balance perspective. If we consider the anthropometric characteristics of the majority of people around the world, it is pretty clear to see that human beings are far better at gaining weight than losing it. While there are MANY factors that determine an individuals weight, energy-balance mechanisms have evolved over time to aid humans in survival and play a part in this phenomenom. These mechanisms are typically much better at gaining weight than losing it, as for the majority of our earlier time spent on our current evolutionary branch, food has frequenctly been quite scarce to come by. As such, an internal mechanism (FTO overexpression) that upregulates energy storage (fat gain) and slowing fat cell death (apoptosis) makes a lot of sense for a living creature that may have to take advantage of a temporary food source or endure long periods without food. Of course, the opposite is true, where a period of fasting that downregulates FTO and upregulates apoptosis is reducing the number of cells in the body that require energy, making the organism more energy efficient. It is very fascinating to see the way mRNA modification influences and is central to concepts discussed throughout my masters.

Before I had heard of Race, I was quite interested in fasting and fast-mimicking diets for a number of reasons - one of which being the "purging" action of pre-cancerous cells.

I'm wasn't sure if there is a direct correlation between fasting/ketogenic states and FTO inhibition, but it made sense to me at the time and down the Race rabbit-hole I went..

There were also a few studies I read that said fasting during chemo treatments increased effectiveness (again with similarities to Bisantrene) which were interesting..

Would be curious to know if I'm off my tree or if indeed a similar mechanism is at work here.

Dr Dom D'Agostino and I think Dr Peter Attia had a few good articles I can dig up if you are curious.
