Insurance companies are pretty good at risk management so there are no doubt good reasons for not providing insurance.
Here is one good reason:
In 1992, 0.3% of mothers died in childbirth, in 1900 it was 7.2%. In 1900, most births were home births with midwives.
My children were all born in a modern well equipped hospital so that if anything went wrong, there were doctors and necessary equipment to hand. My wife would have it no other way and believes women who have home births are stupid. But stupid people still have choice - just that they will have to do without midwives if they can not get insurance.
