Watching the dynamic developing around you and afawcett, i’m wondering how much is amplified by the sterile echo chamber that’s the internet. With no real human cues, it’s easy for online interactions to go directions the parties would never intend.
You have common interests (ICG, geology, a keenness to learn) - is there room for you to connect off the forum, have a real conversation, resolve the tension and maybe even help afawcett along his path?
