That's right; blindly following any sports and hanging onto any sporting success with bated breath as a jingoistic nationalistic focal point to ausage and massage a blindingly obvious lack of national and international achievement and success on a grand scale in where it counts: in success upon which nations are ultimately judged on over the longterm; their socio-cultural legacy and how that has contributed to world civilisation; Literature, scupure,philosophy,etc.
It's called compensating; and god how I hate that Australians take swimming so serisouly and laud their swimmers as national heroes, as they now do ametuer celebrity tv reality stars.
In my opinion,swimming is not a serious sport, and is a novelty and a poor excuse for not having valid and successful track and field athletitic stars.
Now Cricket; that's a game like chess that i can understand and find interesting and that is international; that's Australia's number one sport.
Remember, sport is for enjoyment, not a vehicle for nationalistic exhultation.
