While I would have loved a surprise bunny out of the hat, there are two factors that make view the dividend in a positive light.
1. History of value destruction in the resources sector due to acquisition timing (usually at peak of the cycle, as that's when funding is available)
2. Franking credits. If not for the dividend, they are just sitting on those credits, which are quite valuable
